What Is Acne?
Acne is a skin condition characterized by skin eruptions, and the formation of pimples, blackheads, and blemishes on the skin. Acne primarily affects teens and adolescents, but also frequently affects adults. Acne breakouts most often occur on the face, but may also appear on the back, chest, thighs, upper arms, and buttocks.
What Are the Symptoms of Acne?
Acne may present a variety of symptoms, affecting each person differently. The characteristics, severity, and frequency of acne breakouts vary widely between individuals. Normally, acne is detected by the presence of blemishes, pimples, boils, and blackheads or whiteheads on the skin. These unsightly blemishes often exhibit signs of bacterial infection, such as the release of pus or whitish liquid. Breakouts may become painful when pimples burst open and become infected. Some patients experience significantly more frequent and severe symptoms than others.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is believed to be caused by a buildup of natural skin oils combined with dead skin cells that clog pores and hair follicles in the skin and encourage the growth of harmful bacteria leading to infection. This accumulated bacteria is also responsible for the eruption and spread of whiteheads, pimples, blemishes, and other, known medically as papules, firm lesions, nodules, and pustules. In some individuals, breakouts occur only in localized areas, while others may suffer from acne breakouts on various areas of the face and body.
Acne may also be caused by hereditary factors. In some cases, it may be tied to dietary or environmental changes, as well as the use of certain cosmetics or medication.
Can Acne Be Prevented?
While acne is not usually preventable, there are measures you can take daily that may effectively control or reduce the frequency and intensity of acne breakouts.
Treatments such as laser skin resurfacing, microneedling, facials, chemical peels, and prescription medications provided through our wellness center may be effective in controlling the frequency and intensity of acne eruptions.
Proper cleansing of the skin is of utmost importance to prevent pores from becoming clogged. Maintaining clean skin helps ward off the accumulation of bacteria that causes acne. By properly caring for your skin, you may effectively reduce the frequency of acne outbreaks.
In some cases, acne breakouts may be caused or exacerbated by a trigger such as a dietary change, or exposure to an environmental toxin, cosmetic, or medication. In these cases, identifying and avoiding the trigger may clear up the condition and prevent future outbreaks.
During your intake consultation, our skin care specialist will note your medical history and address your specific condition, triggers, and treatment options to ensure your acne treatment plan is customized to your unique needs, condition, goals, and lifestyle.
What Types of Acne Treatments Can I Choose From?
If you’re prone to acne, our skin care specialists can develop a customized treatment plan for you. Essentials Medispa & Salon provides the most advanced and effective acne treatments currently available in the field, including:
- Laser Skin Resurfacing: At Essentials Medispa & Salon, we use the the Icon™ laser from CynoSure®. This laser combines the advantages of IPL (Intense Pulsating Light) technology with the fine, precise results of fraxel laser technology, and is versatile enough to treat a variety of skin types. The Icon™ delivers intense pulsating light beams to gently lift away the skin’s outermost layer, taking with it such imperfections as blemishes and acne scars on the skin’s surface. This exposes a fresh, new layer of healthy skin cells.
- Microneedling: Dermapen® microneedling treatments, such as those offered at Essentials Medispa & Salon have gained widespread popularity among patients and doctors alike. The Dermapen® provides a minimally invasive way to diminish the appearance of acne and acne scars, while stimulating natural collagen production in skin cells and maintaining the outermost layer of skin intact.
Essentials Medispa & Salon also offers non-invasive maintenance treatments such as the Complexion Correction Facial, Acneless Peel, and IPL Photofacial to treat acne scarring. We also offer facial add-ons such as the Anti-blemish Mask.
