SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT IN MELBOURNE, FL

Spider veins are pesky little networks of fine veins that resemble spider webs and form on the face or legs, detracting from a smooth, clear skin texture. Fortunately, spider veins are not dangerous and they are easily treated. At Essentials Medispa & Salon, led by Dr. Michael Lesser in Melbourne, we provide laser spider vein treatment, and sclerotherapy for our patients in Orlando and surrounding Central Florida communities.

How Do Spider Veins Form?

Veins are the vessels through which blood circulates from the extremities back to the heart. Spider veins form when a backflow of blood accumulates in the vein. They may appear on the legs or face and resemble a red or purple spider web. Excessive sun exposure may aggravate the development of spider veins in the face, and certain jobs that require standing and sitting for prolonged periods may exacerbate the appearance of spider veins in the legs. Fortunately, spider veins are not dangerous, are usually not painful, and may be easily treated.

Why Do People Get Spider Veins?

While genetics, age, gender, and medical history all contribute to the formation of spider veins in certain individuals, they can develop in adults of any age with no prior family history of spider veins. People with lighter complexions have an increased risk of developing spider veins on the face as a consequence of excessive sunlight exposure. Spider veins also tend to develop during pregnancy. Weight gain and obesity may also aggravate the condition.

Is There Any Way to Prevent Spider Veins?

While genetic factors may be beyond our control, there are some ways you can reduce the risk of developing spider veins. If your skin is very light, you must protect it from excessive sun exposure by wearing a hat with a brim and using an effective sunscreen product rated SPF 30 or higher. Compression hose may be useful for people whose job requires them to sit or stand all day. It is also recommended you sit with your legs in an elevated position after long periods of standing or sitting. You can promote healthy blood circulation in the legs by eating a healthy, balanced diet and getting regular exercise.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

At Essentials Medispa & Salon, we treat spider veins using one of two state-of-the-art lasers or with Sclerotherapy:

  • The Icon™ laser from CynoSure®, which combines the latest advancements in IPL (Intense Pulsating Light) technology with the fine, precise results of Fraxel laser technology and is versatile enough to treat a wide variety of conditions and skin types; or
  • The GentleMax Pro® laser, considered the top of the line in its field, is effective for treating a variety of skin types, including both lighter and darker skin tones.
  • Asclera®, An Injectable medicine that is used in a procedure called sclerotherapy to remove unwanted veins on your legs, or face.

Laser treatments are typically performed in under an hour, and you will be provided with protective eyewear during this period. After thoroughly cleansing the skin, we will numb the area by applying topical anesthesia to ensure maximum comfort during the treatment. The aesthetician will carefully perform the treatment using a handheld laser device that delivers intense pulsating light beams. The laser gently removes the outermost layers of the skin with its surface imperfections and uncovers a fresh, new layer of healthy, glowing skin.

Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting Asclera® directly into the spider vein, after thoroughly cleansing the skin. Treatment time varies depending on the size and area that is being treated. A typical session lasts 15 to 45 minutes. Generally, 1 to 3 injections may be necessary to treat a given spider or reticular vein.

What Can I Expect After Spider Vein Treatment?

Laser treatments: We will prescribe a special ointment you may use during the recovery period to help keep your skin moist and hydrated, and prevent stinging and soreness as the skin heals. About a day later, the skin will typically crust and peel, much as it does following a sunburn. This process may take several days to heal, and you must refrain from picking at the skin and abstain from using makeup during this period. About two weeks after your procedure you may resume your regular cosmetic routine, but your skin may still feel tender and appear pink for a period of about two months as new skin cells surface. It is imperative to avoid sun exposure and protect the skin daily using a sunscreen product rated SPF 30 or higher during this important healing period.

For Sclerotherapy: You’ll need to wear compression stockings day and night for 2 to 3 days, then for 2 to 3 weeks during the daytime, as directed by your provider. Compression stockings are designed to apply pressure to your lower legs, helping to maintain blood flow, and reduce discomfort and swelling. Compression helps your legs heal and is necessary to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
