What is Latisse®?

Latisse is a unique prescription treatment that stimulates eyelash growth, making lashes become longer, thicker, fuller, and darker. When used as directed, Latisse® provides excellent results in a matter of onlyweeks.

How Does Latisse® Work?

Latisse is a special formula applied to the base of the lash line to stimulate eyelash growth. The active ingredient in Latisse is bimatoprost, a medication originally designed to treat glaucoma. Clinical trials showed patients undergoing treatment for glaucoma with bimatoprost experienced a rapid increase in growth of the eyelashes as a side effect of the treatment. Soon, the product was reformulated specifically to take advantages of its properties as a growth stimulator to produce longer, fuller, thicker, and darker eyelashes.

Can Latisse® Replace Mascara or False Eyelashes?

When used regularly as directed, Latisse® will make your natural eyelashes grow longer, fuller, thicker, and darker, some of the same enhancements mascara and false eyelashes provide. Many users still continue to apply mascara even while using Latisse, and some even continue to wear false eyelashes. The use of Latisse® will simply enhance the entire look. Latisse® may also be used in place of mascara and false eyelashes for a more natural look.

How Is Latisse® Applied?

Latisse is prescribed for daily use. Once the face has been cleansed of all makeup, it should be applied every evening to the base of the upper eyelashes only, . Avoid applying Latisse® inside the eye or on the lower eyelid to avoid the possibility of excess hair growth outside the intended treatment area.

  • Before applying Latisse every night, make sure your face is thoroughly cleansed, makeup and contact lenses have been removed, and any other skin care products have been applied.
  • First, remove the Latisse® applicator from its tray. Then, holding the applicator in a horizontal position, place one drop of the Latisse® solution on the applicator as indicated in the instructions.
  • Carefully trace the applicator along the base of the upper eyelashes beginning at the inner part of your lash line and working your way to the outer part. Avoid spilling any of the solution into your eye, and do not apply to the lower lid.
  • Be sure to blot any excess solution outside the intended area with a clean tissue and dispose of the applicator after each use. Repeat the process on the other eye, using a sterile new applicator to prevent potential contamination from one eye to another.

Why Can’t I Use Latisse® On My Lower Lashes?

Latisse® is a potent product and may cause unintended hair growth in areas where the solution comes in repeated contact with the skin surface.

The correct use of the product is to apply Latisse only to the skin at the base of the upper eyelashes using one sterile applicator per eye, and be sure to carefully blot away any excess product to keep it from running onto other areas. Many patients report that even though they don’t apply Latisse to their lower lashes, the lower lashes are growing as a result of coming in contact with the product while the eyes are closed during sleep.

Is Latisse® Safe?

Latisse has been clinically tested to ensure the product’s safety and efficacy. Bimatoprost was first approved in 2001 as a medical treatment to decrease intraocular pressure in individuals with certain types of glaucoma and ocular hypertension, and its ability to enhance eyelash growth was noted. The medical community has since recognized the long-term safety and efficacy of bimatoprost for therapeutic use as well as for encouraging increased growth and fullness in eyelashes.
