Join the battle against heart dieases by staying well informed.

February is American Heart Month!! Since 1963 American Heart Month has been celebrated as a way to educate Americans by joining the battle against heart disease.

This is a time when all people can focus on their cardiovascular health. Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. Not to worry! You can do a lot to protect your heart and stay healthy.

This year the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention is shining a light on hypertension (high blood pressure). This is a leading risk factor for heart diseases and strokes.

Heart-healthy living means understanding your risk factors and taking steps to reduce your chances of getting heart disease. Your risk rises based on the following: lifestyle choices, age-related changes, if you are overweight, smoking, or consuming excessive alcohol.

A diet high in saturated fats, added sugars, salts, and a low dietary fiber diet may contribute to heart disease. Taking preventive measures such as achieving exercising, and meal planning can lower your risk of developing heart disease and also improve your overall health. Think back to your diet this month, what changes have you made to improve your heart health? Take the step towards a healthier lifestyle today and consult with our R.D.N.
