How do stem cells work?

Stem Cells encourage repair
Stem cell therapy supports the body’s repair response of diseased, dysfunctional or otherwise injured tissue. These powerful and effective stem cells are derived from an FDA-approved, specialized laboratory. I am Brian Whaley ARNP-BC, and I am the director of Rejuvenation here at Essentials Medispa.

Who benefits from Stem Cell therapy?
Recipients of stem cell therapies are wide-ranging and include anyone interested in optimal health, longevity and alternative medicine. Recipients range in profiles from active middle-aged adults, the elderly, the health conscious to elite athletes and high-powered executives, from reversing Frailty in the elderly to shortening recovery time for professional fighters.

What is the longterm effect of Stem Cell therapy?
While nearly all elements humans come in contact with throughout each day of their lives is breaking down, damaging or destroying the body, stem cells work to keep people both alive and thriving. Stem cells’ foci are to repair, stabilize and heal the body, freeing people from pain, perhaps increasing longevity, while enhancing optimum wellness. The human body does diminish the number of stem cells and their effectiveness as it ages.  The transfer of new donor cells is used to replenish this vital store.

HUMAN-UMBILICAL-CORD-TISSUE-STEM-CELL-INJECTION-THERAPY

Human Umbilical Cell Tissue stem cell injection therapy is now our leading protocol.

Top reasons HUCT are so popular:

They are extracted from a healthy baby/healthy mother umbilical cord after birth with the mother’s consent which provides for huge benefits.

No Evasive Extraction from your own body needed that often comes with additional pain, and site side effects making it less evasive.

NO Typing, or matching required

Pre-Harvested Cells ready for injection within 72 hours of order.

Time to treatment reduced (TTT) as many people get treated the same week they are approved for most protocols.

The number of stem cells (STq) in a newborn umbilical extraction are thousands of times more potent than in an aged body.

HUCT Stem Cells Can be delivered at the injection site or POINT OF PROBLEM (POP) or via an IV with a special additive to enhance the results depending on treatment results required and protocol deemed necessary for treatment.

Many high potency protocols in the past were $7,000 to $15,000, and HUCT costs less than the old methods. It does not require 2 different processes thanks to the elimination of the extraction on demand from the client.

Overall HUCT STEM CELLS have been our top choice this year and last. But rest assured we are always creating, testing, looking for the best products, services, and protocols for our clients.

Stem Cells 101: Anti aging and wellness using Stem Cells

Aging is a natural process that is the cumulative effect of genetic and environmental damage to our bodies and DNA. Along with healing us from life’s traumas and noxious environmental stressors, Stem cells found within our bodies combat the effects of aging. Here at Essentials Medspa in Viera we’re interested in finding ways to address this.

Aging is unavoidable so far…, and from which may bring a host of health problems. Early middle age brings with it sexual dysfunction, metabolic slowdown, weight gain, hormonal imbalance. Later, loss of hearing, vision, muscle strength, bone mass, immunity, cognition, and metabolism are just a few of the issues aging causes.

Aging is controlled by genetic and environmental factors. These factors negatively or positively affect our bodies to increase or decrease the aging process within our bodies. The accumulation of these factors will ultimately deplete the stem cells within our bodies, which are the essential healing cells of our bodies. Brian Whaley ARNP_ BC has used these cells in the treatment of degenerative conditions while practicing pain medicine in Seattle Washington.

Stem cells do not typically do ‘work’ in our bodies, unlike muscle cells that are used for running or neurons within our brain for thinking. Instead, one theory states, stem cells have the unique ability to create copies of themselves and transform into other types of cells–such as muscle cells or neurons – which is the basis of body regeneration, another theory states, the cells create the environment of regeneration through the release of exosomes and transference of messenger RNA to damaged tissue causing healing to occur. New tissue is regenerated, and lost function often returns. The reprogramming of the sick cells to reproduce into healthy cells is the best current theory of cellular mechanics.

When the body is injured (e.g., skin cut), cytokines, which are chemical signals used by the body to communicate, are released to activate MSC, and they then travel to the injured area for repair. This ability is called “homing.” MSCs have shown to be highly effective in the alleviation of pain, especially arthritic joint pain, surgery being averted in many cases. The results of studies for reversal of frailty in the elderly are well documented, benefits include improved mental clarity, improved libido, improved feelings of well being, improved mobility. Healing times are decreased in sports injuries, the function returns faster and patients have been pleased with the direct and indirect benefits.

The goal of many current anti-aging treatments is to increase the health and population of stem cells within the body, to better counteract the effects of aging through maintenance or return to youthful regeneration. The type of stem cell that is utilized at Essentials medspa in Viera Florida, is mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). These stem cells have been shown to be a core factor in skin, muscle, cartilage, and bone regeneration, all of which decrease as we age. MSCs can be harvested from the placenta of a newborn baby, from healthy donors after a healthy infant is delivered. This is ethical and safe, and these cells are screened and grown in sterile lab conditions by reputable, and established FDA approved labs. MSCs derived this way are newer more durable and have greater longevity and are more robust than older Adult MSCs.

Stem cells are considered one key to regulating our aging. Since aging is the natural deterioration of our bodies, stem cells help regenerate our bodies by replacing old (degenerated) cells that are too deteriorated to work or damaged beyond self-help. However, as we age the number of mesenchymal stem cells within our bodies will deplete which slows down our youthful regeneration causing us to become symptomatic as we age. Simply by adding new stem cells to the body, we can keep the cell counts elevated and regenerative ability at maximum.

Alternative Healing with Reiki

For several years we have been awakened to “new age” healing modalities that include essential oils, Himalayan salt, meditation, crystals, nutrition, supplements, and energy work. These practices have been used within several cultures for thousands of years, far from being “new.” However, the Western influence of science and medicine had superseded these alternative methods by leaps and bounds with spectacular discoveries and accomplishments. Subsequently, many of these alternative methods were not being utilized or practiced within our own culture, and for those who did were few and far between. We now can understand and respect the need for both areas of healing, and what they offer for each of us. Complimentary alternative methods are considered to be the most effective, as they incorporate both the scientific and holistic approach to healing.

An alternative healing modality that is highly effective and has significantly grown in recognition is Reiki. Reiki is a Japanese method of healing that uses a high frequency of energy to help relax the client, balance their energies and to promote healing from within. Many individuals experience deep relaxation that helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and tension throughout the body, as well as develop better sleeping habits. Also, many individuals that experience chronic pain notice reduction of inflammation and pain, as well as better circulation. It is a spectacular service to assist in the balancing of body, mind, and spirit.

Clients that schedule Reiki at Essentials MediSpa & Salon will find it very similar to massage, with the exception that muscle manipulation is not involved with this treatment. Once in the treatment room, the practitioner will allow you time to dress down to your comfort level, advising you that when ready, to lay face up on the heated massage table, beneath the soft blankets. Once the practitioner returns to the treatment room, she will begin by making sure you are comfortable and start the service by using her hands to apply gentle touch at the crown of the head. Reiki energy comes through and will move through the top of the head to other areas of the body that correlate to chakras, meridians, and energy centers. The practitioner uses gentle touch throughout the service over specific energy centers, consistently channeling high vibrational Reiki energy to the client. If the recipient prefers a hands-free treatment, Reiki energy can be transmitted by the practitioner by merely hovering their hands about 4-6 inches from the client’s body. This method is still highly effective. Most individuals receiving Reiki will notice a change in the flow of energy within the body and a feeling of warmth and peacefulness which is the healing energy at work, creating harmony within the mind and body to promote relaxation.

Some quotes from our Reiki clients..

“I have a very stressed life with trying to balancing job and home life. While I was skeptical about Reiki, a friend encouraged me to try it, thinking, what could it hurt? I’m glad I did. I instantly felt a relaxation come over me and whatever was happening, I could feel my body tingling. I highly recommend this therapy, from one skeptic to possibly another.” Leslie M.

“I’ve always wondered about Reiki and decided I would try it. During the session, I felt a very warm sensation come over me, and my eyes started to water, even though I wasn’t crying and didn’t feel sad. It was a very moving experience for me.” Angelique T.

“From personal experience, I am very experienced with Reiki and try to have an ‘alignment’ about once a month. It keeps me grounded and Renee informs me of blocks she senses and how to correct them. It’s a part of my life, and I love it!” Tristen K.

Trigger Point Injection

What is a Trigger Point Injection?

A trigger point injection is an injection of small amounts of steroids and anesthetic. The injection is intended to help relieve muscle pain associated with muscle spasms or inflammation. Also described as painful “knots” in your muscles, trigger points are the unfortunate result of a muscle that is contracted and cannot relax. A trigger point can be felt under the skin and is often tender to the touch. When pushed, pain radiates from the trigger point to the surrounding area. A trigger point that is left untreated can lead to chronic issues, disorders and ongoing pain.

Is a Trigger Point Injection right for you?

Trigger Point Injections are an excellent solution for muscle pain that has not responded to other treatments such as pain medication, physical therapy or even massage. Especially muscle pain in your arms, legs, lower back, shoulders, and neck. Trigger Point Injections can also treat or reduce pain caused by fibromyalgia, tension headaches, and myofascial pain.

How is Trigger Point Injection performed?

Your appointment will begin with an initial consultation and assessment by our medical staff. While you lie down or sit (depending on the location of your issue) our medical staff will locate the site of pain and talk to you about the severity and symptoms associated with your trigger point. Then, they will insert a small needle directly into the trigger point and inject the mixture of steroid and anesthetic.

After your injection, there is no reason why you cannot participate in all your normal daily activities. We recommended that you avoid anything strenuous for approximately 48-72 hours.

How long will a Trigger Point Injection last?

Because each treatment situation is unique, there is not a definitive answer on treatment length. However, typically the anesthetic will numb the area for 1 to 3 hours. The steroids in the mixture will generally remain in the tissue for about one month.

What are the risks?

As with any other medical procedure, there are always potential risks and side effects associated with treatment. With a trigger point injection, the risks and complications are very low. Potential issues may include bleeding, infection at the injection site or long-term numbness. All of these risks are uncommon and an unlikely outcome from the procedure. After your injection, you may experience temporary soreness or short-term numbness at the injection site.

How do I schedule my appointment?

If Trigger Point Injection sounds like the answer to your suffering and pain, please contact us at Essentials Medispa & Salon. Our staff is trained to discuss your situation and assess whether this treatment is right for you. Call us today at 321.722.2860 to schedule an appointment.

Medical Marijuana for Chronic Pain Management

Chronic pain is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Surveys show that chronic pain affects more people than cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. That is an alarming amount of Americans suffering from pain with no hope for relief. What can be done to help alleviate the symptoms of chronic pain?

What options are available for chronic pain management?

Treatment of chronic pain should encompass a variety of approaches which address a person’s body, mind, and spirit. “What the brain perceives is indisputably modifiable by emotions,” notes Judith Scheman, Ph.D., program director of the Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. When we focus only on the sensory aspect, we fail to appreciate the suffering component of the pain, which is important to recognize because pain is not what occurs at the periphery.” That means that people who are fearful of pain, depressed, or anxious may experience pain differently, and perhaps more severely, than someone who has pain but isn’t experiencing those other emotions. (1)

Medication combined with therapy and other pain management options (i.e. meditation, TENS, relaxation techniques, YOGA, massage) is usually the most effective approach.

What medication is available for chronic pain management?

  • NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), including ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Antidepressants, which can improve sleep and alleviate pain
  • Anti-seizure medications, which can be useful in treating pain related to nerve damage or injury
  • Steroids, like dexamethasone and prednisone, to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Opioids (narcotics) and benzodiazepines (1)
  • Medical Marijuana

How can marijuana treat pain?

Medical marijuana is growing in popularity as an alternative drug treatment for chronic pain. Marijuana contains compounds called cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that interact with cannabinoid receptors in the body. These receptors reduce pain and stimulate the pleasure and reward center in the brain. CBD does not cause a high or have any psychoactive effect. Instead, it interacts with pain receptors in the brain and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Alternatively, THC is a psychoactive drug that produces an elevated state of mind or a “high.” It activates the brain’s reward system and reduces pain levels. (2)

Does marijuana work for chronic pain?

There is insufficient medical evidence and studies to prove the effectiveness of medical marijuana. However, the FDA has approved medications containing synthetic THC cannabinoids for cancer patients. They have also approved medical marijuana for the treatment of two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Aside from those specific uses, the FDA has not yet approved medical marijuana for pain relief.

Independent research studies show positive results for participants. Marijuana seems especially useful for people suffering from neuropathy (nerve pain), chronic migraines, and cancer treatment. It also appears that using medical marijuana for pain management allowed participants to decrease opioid use significantly.

There is a need for additional research before medical marijuana is a viable option for pain management. It is important to consider the risks associated with using medical marijuana before choosing this option. Schedule a consult at Essentials Medispa & Salon to discuss all your options.

PDO Thread Lift : A Note from Brian Whaley, ARNP-BC

I have spoken here before about the importance of maintaining facial volume to offset the effects of aging. Fillers have been an important part of this therapy and the types and uses of fillers vary. I am a proponent of bioactive products because of the longevity and efficacy of them. Many years of many patients who are happy with their results have proven this to be true.

The one drawback that can occur is when a person becomes overfilled, also known by the slang terms “pillow-face” and “cat eyes”.  With a skilled provider this dreaded side effect is usually avoidable and is anticipated long before it ever occurs.  Measures such as decreasing the amount of filler used or the frequency of use can help to avoid this effect.

I have found that the best way to avoid this effect and to improve an already great volume correction is to use the PDO Thread Lift technique. This ligature lifting technique has been around for more than two decades. The suspension of tissues throughout the body has always been part of surgical corrections. Recently however, better instrumentation and technology has made this a non-surgical office procedure and the benefits are similar. This lifting and filling combined is one of the most anti-aging corrections I have ever encountered.

PDO (polydioxanone) technology lifts sagging skin by using dissolvable sutures and small needles placed subcutaneously in specific areas to tighten and contour all over body. The face is an obvious place to use these tools but also the décolletage, above the knees, underarms and neck. They can be used as a filler around the lips or a way to lift the brows. The uses are practically unlimited.

These lifts will last six months to a year but what is left behind is the collagen your body makes as they are absorbed so over time less and less is required.  This is a bioactive material, so the body benefits from its own regeneration abilities. The goal is that we maintain the contour of our best adult faces longer into our later years. We maintain our bodies very well these days and contour our bodies better than many people half our age. The idea of maintaining our facial contours is just as important if not more so, to our sense of wellbeing socially and emotionally long into our golden years.

Every year brings new things and I have strived to keep up with current technologies and apply what I think is best for you and me as well.  I want to just give a hint as to what’s next this new year.  The FDA has allowed the use of Embryonic Stem Cells in many types of pathology and the science is breathtaking in what is being accomplished. I have had great success as a patient and a provider in the alleviation of pain using Embryonic Stem Cells, while practicing in Seattle. We have recently developed protocols in wellness and anti-aging using Embryonic Stem Cells, here at Essentials and we’ll be rolling out our program early in this new year.

So from my desk to you and your whole family, Happy New Year and may GREAT health be yours for years to come!

Best of health,

PDO Thread Lifts: an Exciting New Service Offered at Essentials Medispa and Salon in Melbourne, FL

What is a PDO thread lift?

A PDO thread lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic technique that lifts and tightens sagging skin tissue through the use of polydioxanone threads (PDO).  A POD thread lift is the latest viable alternative to the costly and invasive option of a facelift.  In a PDO thread lift, very fine, absorbable surgical suture threads are implanted into the subcutaneous layer of the skin to provide an intentional grid for targeted collagen production.  These threads remain embedded in the skin causing micro-injuries that stimulate collagen growth and tissue contraction.  In a matter of 6-8 months, the threads are absorbed into the body leaving new threads of your body’s collagen in their place.

How is a PDO thread lift performed?

A local anesthetic (usually lidocaine) is injected into the treatment area to minimize the discomfort of the procedure.  Next, a small stylist is used to permeate the skin and insert the PDO threads.  Through precise placement, the PDO threads are internally anchored under the surface thereby creating external effects which mimic a plastic surgeon’s re-draping procedure.  However, because the procedure is minimally invasive, the entire process takes between 45-60 minutes to complete and requires nominal recovery time. Hence the marketing verbiage of “have a facelift over lunch.”

What issues are addressed by a PDO thread lift?

A PDO thread lift can be used to address issues of structural improvements, volume improvements and overall lifting of the skin.  Also, a PDO thread lift improves the amount of collagen in the skin as the PDO thread converts directly to collagen. Often a PDO thread lift is the next level of solutions once fillers and injectables are no longer sufficient.

What is the PDO thread lift process at Essential Medispa and Salon?

At Essential Medispa and Salon, an initial consultation occurs with our ANRP Brian Whaley in which your specific issues and concerns are addressed.  Because every face is unique and individual, Brian will create a long term treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results.  Visit our Facebook page for a Live interview with Brian in which he explains the process in further detail.

How Can I Slow or Reverse the Effects of Aging?

They say aging is inevitable, but no one says it has to be noticeable.  Every day we live ages us, but how can we slow down the effects on our bodies? Social media shows retouched images of supermodels and photos which use filters to defy the natural consequences of aging. Mainstream media promotes expensive procedures that are not available to the average American.  Isn’t there something that can be done that is affordable and available to all?

The simple answer is “yes a healthy lifestyle can slow aging, but stopping the progression will require professional intervention.”

Does Water Improve the Appearance of Aging Skin?

The skin is about 30 percent water, but there is little evidence indicating that drinking more water every day (such as 8 to 10 glasses) will flush toxins from the skin and generate a “glowing complexion,” as is widely touted in the beauty industry.  Adequate skin hydration won’t prevent wrinkles or other signs of aging related to genetics, but it will assist in keeping skin supple and reduce dryness.  (1)

Can Supplementation Slow Down the Effects of Aging?

Free radicals are the leading culprit in accelerating the appearance of aging.  Dermatologist say “The best prevention strategy against the harmful action of free radicals is a well-regulated lifestyle, with low-stress conditions and a balanced nutritional diet, including anti-oxidative rich food.” (2) The standard American diet often falls short in supplying the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to combat free radicals effectively.  Supplements to consider in your fight for a youthful appearance are Vitamins C, D, E as well as Carotenoids which are derivates of Vitamin A.  Polyphenols, Coenzyme Q10 (known as CoQ10), Essential fatty acids, some proteins, and lactobacilli have also been referred to as “agents capable of promoting skin health and beauty.” (2)

How Does Poor Sleep Accelerate Premature Skin Aging?

“Our study is the first to conclusively demonstrate that inadequate sleep is correlated with reduced skin health and accelerates skin aging. Sleep deprived women show signs of premature skin aging and a decrease in their skin’s ability to recover after sun exposure,” says Dr. Elma Baron. (3)  Research shows poor sleep manifests itself through fine lines, uneven pigmentation and reduced skin elasticity. Studies also show that those who enjoyed quality sleep were more quick to recover from stressors to the skin such as sun and environmental toxins. “This research shows for the first time, that poor sleep quality can accelerate signs of skin aging and weaken the skin’s ability to repair itself at night,” said Dr. Daniel Yarosh. (3)

Can Facials Help Diminish Aging?

Yes, facials can make a big difference in skin tone and appearance.  The licensed staff at Essentials Medispa & Salon can “renew and invigorate your skin by providing deep cleansing and delivering essential nutrients to thirsty skin cells.”  Regular facial treatments condition, restore moisture, and increase elasticity to leave you with a healthy, supple, radiant glow.

What About Using Injectables and Dermal Fillers?

Injectables and dermal fillers are incredibly useful in addressing many issues of aging skin. Whether it’s fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin or thin, brittle skin, dermal fillers can make a significant difference.  Essentials Medispa & Salon is a state-of-the-art cosmetic center that offers multiple fillers that address many signs and issues of aging.

What Other Options Are Offered at Essentials Medispa & Salon?

Although you can make an impact on your skin with healthy living, to indeed reverse the effects of aging, you will need professional help.  Essentials Medispa & Salon offers dermabrasion, chemical peels, micro needling and more to address signs of aging.  The best option to knowing how to improve your appearance is to schedule a consultation with a licensed skin care specialist at Essentials Medispa & Salon in Melbourne. We provide excellence in skin care treatments for our patients in Orlando and neighboring areas in Central Florida.

How do I get rid of my wrinkles? – Contours of Youth

How do I get rid of my wrinkles?

When it comes to the cause of facial aging, the blame has usually rested with the old standby culprit- THE WRINKLE!  This is not the case! Especially when most people are asking, “How do I get rid of my wrinkles?” The greatest culprit in the appearance of an elderly face is the loss of facial volume. Just like a container holds volume, we need to think of our face as a container for the tissue (fat pads) that lifts our skin off of the bone and creates beautiful cheeks and jawlines. Hollow facial concavities give an aged and tired appearance.

Why does my face wrinkle? What has been done to treat wrinkles in the past?

Facial fat pads become atrophic (shrink) in our middle years as a normal part of the aging process. Early treatment by implants and collagen were less than satisfying, so alternatives were developed. Fat transfers were available but a part of the population did not want surgery. In the early 2000s, hyaluronics like Restylane were introduced. These were well received by the public and volume replacement became common. Collagen and implants became less utilized, although fat transfers are still used in surgery. Unfortunately, over time injection techniques became more superficial and less effective. Instead of volume replacement, superficial lines were being targeted. This is a poor substitute for volume replacement, due to the short duration and lack of contour creation. The average aesthetic patient was becoming a line chaser instead of a volume replacer. Facial contouring is not chasing lines, it is replacing lost volume, creating contour, and treating the cause – not the symptoms of facial aging. Lines are caused by volume loss and if nothing is done, the face will become emptier and more skeletal as time goes on.

How can I have a longer lasting wrinkle correction result?

Fortunately, the answer to volume loss has been discovered and we have many options at Essentials Medispa and Salon to address this problem. Products such as Juvéderm, Restylane, Versa, and Lyft are well tolerated and effective volume replacements. The duration of these products varies, but when injected properly and with proper amounts they can last up to two years. Essentials Medispa’s Rejuvenation Director, Brian Whaley recommends one year as the time frame to come in for a touch up. It is not advisable to allow treatments to wear off completely.

Another long lasting treatment for volume loss is found within bioactive formulas. Unlike hyaluronic medications, bioactive medications cause significant collagen growth. Collagen is the longest lasting form of volume replacement. Sculptra is our bioactive medication of choice here at Essentials Medispa and Salon in Melbourne, Florida. Once injected, patients can expect up to five years of volume correction.  Together with your practitioner, a maintenance schedule is setup so that a ¾ full approach is maintained. Volume replacement for facial rejuvenation is like the gym is for our bodies. It is best to first get to the place we want, so that we can then focus on maintaining our new body!
