What Are Age Spots and Sunspots?
Age spots and sunspots, sometimes referred to as “liver spots,” appear as small brown spots on areas such as the hands, face, neck, shoulders, arms and chest. In some cases, they may become raised and discolored. Although these spots may make people look older, they are primarily caused by excessive exposure to sunlight and factors such as skin type, rather than age, and are not usually dangerous. Age spots and sunspots typically appear more often on people with lighter complexions who live in warm, sunny climates or spend a lot of time out in the sun.
How Are Age Spots and Sunspots Treated?
At Essentials Medispa & Salon, we use the Icon™ laser from CynoSure® as well as the GentleMax Pro® laser, representing the most advanced laser technology in the field. This allows great versatility in treatment options for rejuvenating the skin, by effectively eliminating surface imperfections such as age spots and sunspots. Depending on the location and severity of your spots, our skin care specialist will determine the best treatment method for your condition.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Age Spot and Sunspot Treatment?
Age spot and sunspot treatments are recommended for healthy men and women of any age. How Are Age Spot and Sunspot Treatments Performed?
At Essentials Medispa & Salon, we use one of two lasers:
- The Icon™ laser from CynoSure®, which combines the latest advancements in IPL (Intense Pulsating Light) technology with the fine, precise results of fraxel laser technology and is versatile enough to treat a wide variety of conditions and skin types; or
- The GentleMax Pro® laser, considered the top of the line in its field, and is effective for treating a variety of skin types, including both lighter and darker skin tones.
The procedure typically takes about an hour to perform, and you will be provided with protective eyewear during the treatment period. After cleansing the skin thoroughly, we will numb the area with topical anesthesia to prevent any potential discomfort during the procedure. The treatment is performed by carefully directing a handheld laser device that delivers intense pulsating light beams. The laser gently lifts away the outermost layers of the skin, taking with them any surface imperfections, and revealing a fresh, new layer of healthy skin cells.
What Happens After Age Spot and Sunspot Treatment?
Following your procedure, we will prescribe a special ointment to help keep your skin hydrated and prevent stinging and soreness as your skin heals from the treatment. It is normal for the skin to crust and peel within a day after laser treatments, much as it does following a sunburn. This process may take five to ten days to heal, and during this period you must not pick at the skin and you should abstain from using makeup. You may resume your normal cosmetic routine and use of makeup about two weeks after your procedure. For a period of about two months, your skin will feel slightly tender and appear pink as new skin cells are revealed and exposed. During this period of recovery, you must avoid excessive sun exposure and protect the skin daily using a sunscreen product rated SPF 30 or higher.
